Sir: With reference to World Children’s Day that was commemorated on November 20, this is to bring into view that Pakistan is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of Children. It has been 24 years since Pakistan signed the treaty promising to grant all children a comprehensive set of rights but unfortunately even after making Article 25-A (free and compulsory education) a part of Pakistan’s Constitution, we still have around 25 million children out of school. The low preference given to making investments in children has serious implications in terms of their health and education. There is not enough of a budgetary allocation to meet the health, education, welfare and other needs of children. It is recommended the government prioritise an increased budgetary allocation for education, health and child protection. MEENA GABEENA Via Email
