Sir: Pakistan is facing multiple issues such as energy crisis, inflation and low tax-to-GDP-ratio. The PML-N government is doing all that it can to alleviate the situation. It has started work on a number of projects to build the energy sector so that more electricity could be produced at cheaper rates. But I fail to understand why the PML-N government is wasting time on promoting solar energy. It is one of the most expensive sources of renewable energy. At best a solar panel can convert only 19 percent radiation into energy, which means that a 100 watt solar panel will produce only 19 watts of energy. The life of a panel is also not more than ten years in most cases. Therefore hydel, coal, nuclear and wind makes the best combination of sources of energy. Solar power cost per unit is Rs 22 in Pakistan, whereas coal and hydel power cost per unit is Rs 11 each. Adding solar energy to Pakistan’s energy mix will only increase the cost of electricity.
