Sir: Pakistan is spending Rs. 54.7 billion on the development of higher education. More than six thousand research articles are published annually from Pakistan. The impact of this research is invisible though. The reason the research remains unapplied is the intent of the researcher who merely wants to enhance his knowledge and does not consider the practical implications of the research. Today, a majority of our publications are related to theoretical Physics and Mathematics. Even in a purely practical field of Biotechnology or Medical Science, we tend to find topics that only require theoretical study for research. The attitude shows that we are doing research not to find out new solutions to the issues besetting society, rather we are doing research just for the sake of research and nothing else. We must know that the sole purpose of research is to serve society. We have to restrict all the educational institutions to bring out research papers that have practical implications and are not done just for the sake of a degree. Muhammad Asad Ishaq Islamabad
