The razing of a Hindu temple in Larkana is a sad and revealing event. Sindh has historically been one of the most religiously diverse and tolerant provinces in the country and there is a substantial Hindu community there. It is one of the last few places in Pakistan where there is still a Hindu community, despite the mass migration of Hindus during and following partition. They represent an irreplaceable part of Pakistan’s multiplicity of cultures and peoples. As citizens they have the same rights as any other person in this country. However, some forces, particularly religious leaders who want more money and power, are using the blasphemy law and the bigotry of people to try and drive these citizens either underground or away. This must stop; the peaceful Hindus of Pakistan are more our brothers than the Taliban terrorists blowing up schools and murdering young women. The twisted mullah worldview must be kept from spreading inverted logic among the people. Both Hindus and Muslims must come together to defeat the terrorists and their facilitators.
