Sir: Mr Najam Sethi is a respectable journalist and I am very impressed with his depth of knowledge about a number of national and international issues. However, everybody has some limitations and this principle also applies to Mr Sethi. During an episode of his programme “Aapas ki Baat” aired on June 6, 2015, he discussed the tax evasion problem in the context of the budget 2015-16. I was shocked to learn that only 900,000 persons are registered taxpayers among the total population of 200 million people. Nine percent is one of the lowest percentages in the world. Mr Sethi gave a panacea for solving all tax evasion problems by suggesting that the government should abolish Rs 1,000 and Rs 5,000 currency notes that according to him is the main reason for tax evasion. I strongly disagree with Mr Sethi on this issue. If the government abolishes Rs 1,000 and Rs 5,000 notes from circulation, tax evaders will resort to using $ 100 notes. This will aggravate the problem and result in the dollarisation of our economy, which will be very bad for the country. I believe that our tax evasion problem can be solved if our rulers start paying their genuine share of taxes. EJAZ AHMAD MAGOON Lahore
