Sir: This is with reference to the growing number of people migrating from North Waziristan (NW) to IDPs camps. The count has risen close to one million. When the last National Census was held in 1998, the population of NW was reported to be around 400,000. Even if the population has doubled in the last 15 years, it should not have been more than 800,000. There was little chance of people from other areas moving to North Waziristan in the last 20 years owing to the prevailing security situation. One cannot ignore the probability of people from other areas posing as IDPs to make hay from the charity being doled out by the government and local NGOs. If this is what is happening, it will increase the challenges faced by the government. It will put pressure on the resources being allocated for managing the IDPs. Both civil and military authorities should closely watch those registering as IDPs. The possibility of Afghan nationals or even militants from adjoining areas arriving and registering themselves as IDPs in order to save their skin cannot be ruled out either. Muhammad Faisal Islamabad
