Sir: In more bad news, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has called Peshawar the world’s largest reservoir of the polio virus and has demanded that immediate and urgent action be taken to rid the area of the disease. It is being reported that almost every polio case in Pakistan in 2013 can be linked to a polio strain originating from Peshawar. This is alarming news indeed and one fears that the international community will take swift action if we do not. What is the government waiting for? Yes, one understands that the terrorists have made it a dangerous task to eradicate the disease but we cannot give up. If we do, then the militants have won the war — we will have a nation of crippled children ill equipped to deal with the world. Furthermore, we will become a pariah state. Is this what the authorities want? AHSAN ZAHIR Lahore
