Sir: We do not have an organisation for research on petroleum consumption and conservation to develop fuel-efficient equipment and devices, which can help us in adopting fuel-saving measures. It is reported in media that the oil import bill of the country is swelling and there is a need to take fuel-saving measures to minimise reliance on oil imports for domestic consumption. I have been reading a lot in the media for quite some time about some innovative foreign technology-based equipment that gives savings in fuel consumption as much as up to 25 percent. According to some reports, India had set up a research organisation called Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) in 1976. It was set up to identify the potential and to make recommendations for achieving conservation of petroleum products. For achieving these objectives, the body sponsors research and development activities for development of fuel-efficient equipment/devices and also organises multi-media campaigns for creating mass awareness for the conservation of petroleum products. Pakistan, with 85 percent reliance on import of oil from friendly and other countries for meeting its ever-growing domestic requirements, can learn from the Indian experience. Pakistan should establish a body similar to the PCRA in the public sector with the same objectives for which it was set up in India. If such a research body is set up, it can also, among other activities, undertake research on the foreign technology-based gadgets which give saving in fuel consumption. Asmaar Bilal Shaikh Lahore
