Sir: Cicero, the father of jurisprudence, said in 54 BC that law is based on nature not opinion. To the principles of law he gave all his life. He did two things: one, converted the Roman Empire into a legitimate entity through the application of law of nature and second, transformed the brute legal fraternity into a cultured body. This country is lacking legal reforms at the grassroots level; no government has ever tried to implement any in whatsoever form. For reforms one requires will and good intentions; anything else is just an excuse to evade the same. Laws, legal systems, rules and principles are all made and practiced to help people. The objective is to make a citizen believe that he or she is honourable. The problem with our law is not the law itself but its interpretation. In Pakistan everything is passing through a formative phase. That includes the judiciary, which needs reforms. Aiman Salahuddin Karachi
