Sir: The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has rejected the proposal of introducing pant-shirt uniform in the government schools of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). JI provincial chief Mushtaq Ahmed Khan has said that the JI will not allow the violation of tradition of shalwar-kameez uniform in the government schools. This would result in Americanisation of education, says JI. On the contrary, the JI’s sponsored schooling network, Dar-e-Arqam School, has made pant-shirt dress mandatory. This dichotomy speaks volumes of aberration. People generally assume that pant-shirt and tie are inherent symbols of Christianity, which is a blatant distortion. There is no mention of this in the Bible. Again, it is misconstrued that kurta, including shalwar kameez, is an Islamic dress although it is not mentioned in the Quran. From a socio-cultural perspective, it varies from region to region. Eskimo people wear thick and tight dress in a bid to fight the chilling cold. In Pakistan, people in the northern areas wear the same dress. It is rightly said that a man is known by his dress and address. An individual’s dress sense speaks volumes of his character and personality. Benjamin Franklin said: “Eat to please thyself but dress to please others.” But in my opinion wear dresses to please yourself as well as others. The JI must learn from its murky past of being played by successive regimes as strategic tool and proxy. Regretfully, the fusion of religion and politics has paralysed Pakistani society. The PTI-led coalition must resist the forces of evil and darkness tooth and nail. Militancy and terrorism have played havoc with the lives of innocent flowers, it is time for course correction.SAEED ULLAH KHAN WAZIRBannu
