Sir: Why does it sound like a joke that the military has abandoned the bad versus good Taliban policy? It seems improbable, since it needs a shift in the military policy of proxy warfare embedded in the psyche that regards India as our biggest enemy. The military will never ever afford such a mistake, especially when India has become involved in various development works in Afghanistan and when the US is withdrawing from the region. The Taliban being our strategic asset cannot be left out just like that. Even if we believe for a moment the military’s claim that it has abandoned the good versus bad Taliban policy, then how would it justify the presence of parties such as the Jamat-ud-Dawa, Jaish-e-Muhammad, etc? These parties have been found providing relief goods and services to the displaced people at the camps in Bannu. They, including the Jamaat-e-Islami, have been accused of recruiting youth for the war in Syria and Iraq. Let’s see how things change once the US is out of Afghanistan. However, those who think that militancy will end with the North Waziristan operation should rethink their claim. Manzoor Tareen Pishin
