Sir: Like other parts of the globe, drastic and dramatic climate change will definitely bring enormous and unpredictable changes to our agriculture, food security and other areas in Pakistan but our self-centred ruling elites seem neither alive to the unexpected climate change nor they are sensitised to take pragmatic measures such as legislative, administrative and scientific. It will be appropriate to quote Thomas Jefferson, a US founding father and principal author of The Declaration of Independence, who once wrote that “the greatest service which can be rendered any country is to add a useful plant to its culture; especially a bread grain.” It has been estimated that there are almost 80,000 species of edible plants, of which fewer than 20 produce 90 percent of the world’s food. If underutilised species are conserved, they could help to feed growing populations but who cares in this country. HASHIM ABRO Islamabad
