Sir: In a city like ours, where there is a school standing in almost every corner of Karachi, it is appalling to see that the city hits every mark of an illiterate society. How do we fail to see the irony here? Should not society have educated minds with so many schools around? Trash, filth and garbage on every road, lack of civic sense, jumping queues might seem like trivial things but these are the hallmarks of an illiterate society. But then again, we are never taught to ponder on these little things. Our schools for the most part focus more on books and papers than on educating minds for the betterment of society. Our aim is not to make a better place to live in but to get a degree that leads to a good job that pays a lot. It is time we as a society change our mindset. Sending children to a good school is not the only part of educating them. Teaching them every subject except their social responsibilities will not help bring a positive change. Instead of complaining about the wrongs in society, educate people to help solve them. Abeer Anwaar Karachi
