Sir: I am an overseas Pakistani and want to express the concern of overseas compatriots over the unscrupulous move by the federal government in the form of levy of Withholding Tax (WHT) of 0.3 percent on all banking transactions. Although traders are already protesting against this extortionist tax, yet it has adversely impacted common citizens and the overseas Pakistanis in particular whose income is otherwise exempted from income tax. This exorbitant tax has been levied regardless of the nature of transactions and is discouraging the people to carry out transactions through banks. For instance, I remitted foreign exchange to my own account in Pakistan and then transferred partial amount to my family’s account in the same bank branch but it was subjected to the WHT. I suggest the federal government to review this coercive tax otherwise even common people and overseas Pakistanis will be encouraged to channelise their transactions through non-bank means.TAHIR MAHMOOD NADEEMJubail Saudi Arabia
