Sir: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government has announced to fix the energy problems during its tenure. The government claims that it will not only reduce the energy deficit, but also help reduce its cost by working on low cost energy projects. After more than two and a half years, the country is still facing an acute energy shortfall, while line losses have increased manifold. Now the incumbent government has allowed the construction of solar power plants, which have the highest cost per unit energy. Why is the PML-N government deviating from its set goals? Why is the government increasing the cost of energy in Pakistan by installing and agreeing to buy the energy at even higher rates than the current furnace oil producers? Why has the PML-N failed to reduce line losses, especially considering that no one can steal electricity without the knowledge of the local linesman? I think the PML-N government needs to explain these deviations from its set plan. Otherwise it is obvious from the current practice that the PML-N will not only increase the cost of energy for consumers, but the slow work will also increase line losses across Pakistan and bring the energy supply companies to the brink of bankruptcy.
