Sir: I would like to draw the attention of the Islamabad administration to the soaring prices of food items during Ramzan. Ever since the holy month began, the prices of fruit and vegetables have doubled. Besides, prices of other edibles are also on the rise. It is unfortunate to note that the local administration is not seen acting against profiteering. Fruits such as mangoes, peaches, apricots and plums, which were commonly available in a range of Rs 80-100 before Ramzan, have now crossed the figure of Rs 200 a kg. The same is the case with vegetables. The local administration falls under the jurisdiction of the interior ministry. However, no one from the high-ups is taking any cognizance of this situation. Sasta Ramzan Bazaars, which were a regular feature of Islamabad, have been abandoned this year on the pretext of security. I urge the local government, which unfortunately has no representation from citizens, to take notice of this situation and adopt measures to bring the prices of food items back to pre-Ramzan levels.
