Sir: The National Book Foundation (NBF) has initiated a very welcome and commendable programme to encourage reading habits among citizens. A membership card will be issued to interested readers against which they can purchase books at discounted price. We can hope that such an initiative would help revive the reading culture in our society, particularly among our youth. As per rules, they have set a maximum purchase limit of Rs 5,000 against the card and each card will be issued for a period of one year. It cannot be renewed before the expiry of the one year period. Through this worthy platform, I want to make two requests to the NBF authorities. First, they should enhance the purchase limit against the membership card from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000. Second, if this is not feasible, they should at least allow members to get their cards renewed anytime whenever they expire on hitting the maximum limit. Once again, it is quite laudable the way NBP is promoting a reading culture in Pakistan. It is playing an effective role in the provision of quality books at low prices. SAUD AHSAN Via Email
