Sir: Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I want to draw the attention of the concerned authorities towards a new trend introduced by our Pakistani entertainment channels. Nowadays, almost every channel has started showing game shows while emulating the previous PTV’s famous programme Neelaam Ghar (Auction House). Leading media houses like GEO, ARY and Hum TV are telecasting these game shows with different names but are applying the same criteria. The problem in these types of shows is that they are making people greedy. The pattern of these programmes is making people impatient and prompts them to use shortcuts for getting valuables. If we talk about Neelaam Ghar, in that programme the intelligence and knowledge of participants were tested before they were given prizes. But in the currently televised game shows, prizes are given away without following any specified criteria. It is more like gambling; choose a number and you will get something. All this is destroying the concept of contented living within society. If someone wins a laptop or a mobile phone, he wants a motorbike; if someone wins a motorbike, he wants a car and in some instances, people are seen demanding or begging for things. Moreover, dancing, music, singing, shouting and being cheap are major features of these shows. This is done to promote the shows and improve channels’ ranking. The decency of shows has vanished. We should stop such shows or find a new way to spread happiness among people. The sponsors of these game shows should give these gifts to the poor and needy people in our country. SIDRA AJMALKarachi
