Sir: It is deplorable that a worker of MQM was subjected to a brutal investigation. His arrest from his marriage ceremony is also equally loathsome. He may have been involved in heinous crimes, and wanted in a number of cases. But the timing of his arrest and the torture meted out to him without presenting him before a magistrate shows that the culture of self-rule by the police and the denial of justice by mitigating the status of courts is still prevalent. If he was so dangerous then why did not the police act against him before? Why suddenly the urge to arrest him? Why could not the police wait till the next day? Such methods, or I would say sweeping way of controlling crimes bounce back. The MQM with its history of striking at its enemies or detractors with a vengeance is well known. The operation in Karachi so far has been successful in only arresting a few criminals. It has neither been successful in getting these criminals punished through the courts or in curbing violence in the city. Amjad Khan Karachi
