Sir: The recent killing of Malik Ishaq, the leader of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, in a police shootout was another step towards the elimination of the menace of extremism and sectarianism that have plagued the country for so many years. There are concerns that the death of the leader of a banned organisation was an extrajudicial killing, which is still not clear whether it is true or not. Why do we forget the fact that the man was responsible for murdering more than a hundred people and he was running an organisation that was a splinter group of the TTP, involved in a number of sectarian attacks. Malik Ishaq had killed so many innocent people and he was a threat to peace. He had not been punished by the courts due to the inherent flaws in our judicial system. If the state has finally decided to expand the operation against terrorists to the cities, it should be welcomed because we are fighting a war with an enemy that resides within us. We should stand with the state at this juncture. At the same time, the law enforcement agencies should not indulge in extrajudicial killings, that can open a new Pandora’s box. HAFSA KHALEDLahore
