Sir: According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to life, liberty and security. No one shall be subjected to torture or to any kind of inhuman treatment. All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. What happened in Model Town Lahore was contempt of human rights. People were treated brutally and punished viciously. Several protesters were killed by police gunfire and the forces behind this incident have not yet been identified or revealed, which has outraged the emotions of every sensitive human being in the country. The lack of accountability in this case is also draining the public’s respect for the government and democratic system in Pakistan. In such a situation, it needs to be realised by government officials that the recognition of the inherent dignity and of equal and inalienable rights of all members of society is the foundation of democracy, freedom, justice and peace in a country.
