Sir: The wedding of Imran Khan is surely his private and personal matter. Being a political figure, it has drawn expected attention from all quarters in both negative and positive ways. Ironically the real issue that seems to be forgotten here is the respect we as a society give to women. Social media along with the electronic media has presented a very dark picture of our society in which we stoop so low when it comes to respecting women. The pictures and videos of Reham Khan and the comments being posted are deplorable. Our religion teaches us to think twice before uttering any words against the piousness of a woman. We have been taught all our lives that “Maan kay pairon kay neechay Jannat hai” (Heaven lies beneath the feet of mothers) but the treatment of the fair gender in our society speaks for itself of the hollowness of our mental state. In a talk show recently aired, one of the guests had the moral bankruptcy of indirectly referring to women as “new or used cars” while commenting on Imran’s marriage. Sadly, no NGO has taken note of it; for this requires a higher level of moral courage and values. Today one feels ashamed of the fact that we live in a so-called Islamic state where the basic principles of morality are being shredded with impunity. Instead of standing up, it’s time we should all hang our heads in shame. DR. IRFAN ZAFAR Islamabad
