Sir: There are 500 large boats in Mubarak village in Karachi, which sail between Gwadar and Karachi. In addition to large boats, there are 800 small boats, which are used by poor villagers who earn their bread and butter by catching fish. Most of the fishermen rely on traditionally built small boats and cannot carry on fishing activities during the high tide due to the poor condition of their boats. Mubarak village is situated about 30 kilometers from the city centre. The small but scenic coastal village has been inhabited by fishermen for centuries. With a population of more than 10,000 persons, the village is still without basic amenities. Fishing boats are in bad condition, which cannot voyage in the open sea. Several fishing boats have already sunk. Fishermen don’t have money to get their broken fishing boats repaired. The government is collecting taxes worth billions of rupees from the fishing sector but always ignores the problems of fishermen. The government should address their genuine problems. It should launch a development package by providing them new boats. SARFRAZ HAROON Karachi
