Sir: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) comprises of national and domestic selection committees. The national selection committee is the most important body of the PCB. It is responsible for extracting the cream from the whole cricketing lot of the country whereas the domestic selection committees craft the domestic teams, which are then in theory monitored again by the national selectors for the selection of the national team. Whenever Pakistan’s cricket team fails to deliver, cries of changing the PCB chairman or the members of the selection committee can be heard all around. When the PCB holds the selectors accountable, it changes them and appoints new selectors. During the last so many years, the top performers of the domestic circuit have been left out just by choice without any justifiable reason, countless careers have been destroyed and many have left the idea of securing a spot in the national team through their performance in the domestic circuit since the uncertain moods of the selectors do not guarantee an international appearance. Unfortunately, the PCB has done nothing to change the selection process of the national and domestic teams. The core of the problem lies in the discretion of the selectors because they can legally select whomever they want, which leads to an unfair use of powers. There are no formal, legal rules or regulations according to which they should select and be held legally accountable for an unfair selection according to those rules and regulations. What has been seen lacking is a legal assurance to the domestic cricketers that the highest run getters or the top wicket takers will be given a chance in the national team so that if such a deserving player is still left out he can have a legal basis of taking the matter to court or a tribunal to make the committee answerable for such a measure. Such an example was set by Ramnaresh Sarwan of the West Indian cricket team who was left out by the West Indian selectors; he took his case to court and won his admission to the national team. Even if the PCB questions such a reform, what needs to be asked is if being the top performer in the domestic circuit is not the criterion for selection then what is? This idea similarly needs to be carried forward towards the selection of the domestic cricket teams, which also lie at the mercy of the selectors. For a better future, the PCB needs to reform the selection system of Pakistani cricket. ABDULLAH TAHIR Islamabad
