Sir: I have learnt that no state or government can function without politics to solve the socio-economic and other problems of the people. But, unfortunately, politics in Pakistan are associated with deception, cunning, double-crossing and lying after taking oath in order to reach a selfish position. The effect of such politics has manifested itself through negative repercussions in society. However, as politics is akin to obtaining power and furthering various aspects of material life, it has been abused throughout our history. In any occupation and profession there are users and there are abusers. In politics, the abusers have brought disrepute to the approach adopted by the honest politicians. Imagine what society and the country would be like if the conscientious and responsible politicians abandoned the field in favour of the abusers, who would go to any length to grab power for material gains. The latter type of politicians are prone to hold a monopolistic attitude. HASHIM ABRO Islamabad
