Sir: The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) has recently unveiled its Higher Education Institutions’ Ranking List for 2015. This ranking list has caused great chaos in academia for various reasons. The ranking is being considered as dubious because some of the universities that do not even properly perform their basic function of educating students have been ranked on higher positions. On the other hand, those universities which are performing comparatively better in terms of providing proper education, better teaching facilities, publishing quality research papers and above all producing intelligentsia for the nation, have either been ranked inferior or not even put onto the list. It seems that merit has not been taken into consideration while compiling this report. HEC needs to drastically improve its evaluation system and avoid making such rankings which are in contradiction with reality. The current ranking report has not only discouraged the top performing universities but also given rise to doubts about the evaluation system for education in Pakistan. MOHAMMAD HASSAM SIDDIQI Karachi
