Sir: According to a news report, a new polio case has been detected in Quetta. It is the first case reported in Balochistan while 3rd in Pakistan in the year 2016. The reluctance of parents to give polio drops to their children has inevitably resulted in children contracting the crippling disease. Many parents believe in myths spread by extremists that the polio vaccine causes infertility. This belief has not only affected the life of innocent children but also resulted in a large numbers of deaths of polio workers at the hands of the terrorists. Pakistan is the second country after Afghanistan that has failed to eliminate polio while Nigeria and India have successfully eradicated polio long ago. This is high time the government should take remedial measures against the spread of polio. Campaigns should be launched to create awareness among people about the importance of polio vaccine. Polio is highly infectious which not only paralyses an individual but also causes a stigma to the nation. The health departments in Pakistan too need to introduce effective strategies to combat this disease. MAHNOOR MUSTAFA Kech
