Sir: Hybrid technology in cars is still in its early stages in Pakistan. Despite this, for many car manufacturers it is a go ahead signal due to increasing competition in the car industry. Recently, Honda launched its first 1,500 cc sports hybrid car while a few days back Toyota launched its global model of electric vehicle called Prius. However, Honda’s launching of the sports hybrid defies logic as a sports car is meant for speed, which is not the hybrid’s forte. The hybrid is running on a motor at a lower level of speed but when a sports car is driven for pleasure it will be on the engine, eating up fuel like anything. Alongside this, a sports car is considered as a luxury, not as a need, especially in a country like Pakistan where more than 33 percent of the population is living below the poverty line. The manufacturers did not do their homework properly. A hybrid and economical car both go side by side but hybrid with sports design is beyond someone’s expectations. Though the company might consider this to be an out-of-the-box idea but ideas are generated by keeping in mind the target audience; it seems that the Honda hybrid is only meant for the elite segment of society. If this is so, the company should claim it. Since the government has given some duty relaxations to the automotive industry, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) should have put some brains to the plan before utilising this facility to bring a car for the economically aware class of people, not for the elite.
