Sir: Not economic growth but the quality of governance is the pre-requisite for national advancement. A country, having a very high per capital income, might not be successful or not make strides in term of good governance. On the other hand, a country with lower GDP has been fruitful in terms of the quality of good governance. However, a country with high economic growth as well as having high per capital gross national income spreading to all and sundry of the country may not be attributed itself to the developed state or to be encroaching towards the club of developed nations. However, it is economically progressive, but it might drag apropos good governance. So, to call ourselves to be successful in all dimensions of national advancement, nations have to achieve the highest degree of good governance. The economic growth of Pakistan is progressive according to the incumbent government. But, we have not made our quality of good governance better than that before. Weak governance cut short the trade and foreign investment in the country. The frequent incidences of terror attacks in different parts of the country lose the confidence of businessmen and industrialists. The abduction of foreign workers and their humus killings paves the way to withdraw the investment being invested by some extraneous people. So, economic growth and national prosperity is contingent on the quality of good governance. For Pakistan being luxuriant in natural resources, some of which are untapped, it is not sufficient for making economic strides. The Far East Asian countries do not have any natural resources, but they are perusing the good governance by maintaining law and order situations, bring all the corrupt people to justice and deliver quality public services. The same case is for Japan, which became developed nations through its reforms in quality of good governance, also one of the great economies of the world. Pakistan must bring all corrupt practices to end, also get the people involved in corruption and misappropriation of funds to be punished. Their punishment must not be less than death and if not possible, should be life imprisonment. MUHAMMAD BILAL SARWAR Daska
