Sir: History tells us that Pakistan was created to provide an independent and safe home for the Indian Muslims. It is very shameful indeed to observe that India, which is a Hindu-majority country, continues to be a much safer home for Muslims than the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. History stands witness that millions of Muslims lived in relative peace and harmony with their Hindu neighbours in undivided India for centuries. Looking at the rapidly deteriorating situation in Pakistan, it seems that something has gone terribly wrong. The people of Pakistan must figure out the root cause of their political, economic and social problems. This downward slide must be stopped before it is too late. In my humble opinion, it must be recognized that Pakistanis have been and still are people of the Indian subcontinent. In other words, Pakistanis may share the Islamic faith with Arabs, Iranians, Turks, etc, but their cultural heritage is basically the same as that of the Indians. Dr M Husain Sadar Ottawa, Canada
