Sir: This is with reference to the article published on May 24 in Daily Times titled: ‘Lady Health Workers-a vital human resource’ by Meena Gabeena. Where it is commendable that the Lady Health Workers (LHW) have been regularized by the governments in all the four provinces, we must not overlook the need to expand their services in previously unexplored areas. The resources and facilities required for LHWs to expand their services should be taken seriously. Government should provide funds for increasing the number of LHWs and for the purchase of necessary medicines and other equipment. Currently it is the federal government that is paying for the salaries of the LHWs; this should be transferred to the provincial governments to remove hurdles in the regular payment of salaries. It has been a long struggle on the part of the health workers, therefore the government should facilitate them in every possible way. Shifa Khan Islamabad
