Sir: It is extremely disturbing to note that the prices of many commodities, especially fruit and vegetables, have increased tenfold with the advent of the holy month of Ramzan. It is not the first time that Ramzan is hailed in such a manner. Though shameful, the reality is that Ramzan has become one of the most lucrative and profitable months for some Muslims. One glimpse of this reality can be seen on TV screens. The hay the media is making betrays a Muslim’s belief about practicing austerity and simplicity in this holy month. It seems the government’s writ has failed badly in every sphere of life. There is no mechanism in place for the regular surveillance of the market prices. Occasional price checks and imposition of fines have become more of a photo session event for the general consumption of the public. I request the concerned government departments to wake up and come to the rescue of the poor folks. Prof Dr Muhammed Mubarak Karachi
