Sir: Tax is a compulsory contribution to state revenue, levied by the government on workers’ income and business profits. Unfortunately, many of our political leaders have not paid their taxes nor do they have their NTN numbers yet. According to a well-known English newspaper, it has been declared that 47 percent did not pay income tax and 12 percent does not have an NTN number. Mostly the non-paying tax MNAs are in all major parties. The total figure of our responsible leaders in regard of tax includes 54 from the PML-N, 19 from the PTI, 13 from the PPP, seven from the JUI-F and five from the MQM. Moreover, the PKMAP and JI have three each. As such, the AAPML, PML, ANP and NP have one MNA each in this category. I cannot help but think that all the political and famous leaders are fighting for pure elections but can anybody ask who will pay tax on their behalf? It is the foremost duty they need to fulfil before any election. On the other hand, Imran Khan asks people not to give votes to the politicians having money in foreign accounts. Imran Khan talks, in press conferences, about fair elections but first he should try to issue NTN numbers quickly, and then move forward for the elections. I just want to ask our well known leaders if only we have to pay tax and follow all the rules and regulations of this country. This nation has always been ruled by puppets, not by real leaders. Besides this, we do have leaders but unfortunately they do not possess the qualities of true leaders. SAIMA JAMIL KHAN Karachi
