Sir: Economic stability plays a vital role in any nation’s development. In the case of Pakistan, socio-economic problems have soared to alarming levels. According to the Legatum Prosperity Index, which is an annual ranking of 142 countries by a London-based think tank based on a variety of factors including wealth, economic growth, education, health, personal well-being and quality of life, Pakistan ranks at the 130th position in line with the bottom 20. Poor economic conditions are the root cause of so many problems that exist in a society. Out of a total population of almost 190 million, 21 percent of the people are living below the poverty line. It is inarguably agreed that whenever a country suffers from an energy crisis it affects the economy because legitimate factories and industries cannot operate. This leads to lesser jobs and an increase in unemployment all over the country. According to the World Bank’s Business Index 2016, which shows what time is required for starting a business and the energy resources of 189 countries, Pakistan ranks at the 138th position. I would like to request the politicians leading the government and regulating authorities to pay serious attention to the stability and development of our economy. SYED BILAL SHAKIR Karachi
