Sir: Earth hour has been observed as an awareness campaign all over the world, including Pakistan. Celebrating such events is good but ground realities and effort can make all the difference. Pakistan is a country where pollution and environmental concerns are the last topics to be discussed. A polluted environment is disastrous for healthy societies. There is a lack of awareness about cleanliness in our country and there is so much for the government to do in order to reduce pollution and make people aware about cleaning up their surroundings. Tree cultivating festivals, cleanliness awareness campaigns, avoiding plastic bags and all other steps to clean up the environment should be taken. Administrations must install waste dustbins in public places. The government should introduce new laws or some force whose only task is to clean the environment and make people aware of the importance of cleanliness whether through fines or without fines. The traffic police must take notice of vehicles that are polluting the air. Introducing a cycling culture and cycling tracks will also prevent air pollution. Cleanliness arrangements, according to modern standards, can reduce pollution in Pakistan, curbing the cause of so many diseases. In other fields and ideas we like to copy modern western nations but, in the matter of cleanliness, environmental care and hygiene we are still not up to the mark. Islam believes that cleanliness is half of faith. It is ironic that the world’s most polluted countries include many Islamic ones. NAUSHABA ABIDIslamabad
