Sir: Since 1970, 10 general elections and two referendums have been conducted by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which were all considered manipulated and full of flaws. Instead of improving its performance, the ECP has reached to such a low level that the general public has lost all confidence and respect for it. It is an irony that this very essential state institution for democracy has been headed by a retired judge of the apex court and its provincial members are retired judges of the provincial high courts. Judges in all societies are held in high esteem by the people for their integrity and being the custodians of the rule of law and constitution. Unfortunately, in our land of the pure, in which hardly anything is pure, the judges have been giving decisions against democracy and in favour of the military. They are equally responsible for not allowing true democracy to flourish in Pakistan. To please a military dictator, they ordered the hanging of the most popular political leader. Why are the members of ECP not resigning, when it has been proved that they have failed to perform their duties to conduct and ensure free, fair and transparent elections, which has created political instability in the country? Why are they not setting an example of high moral standards? S T HUSSAINLahore
