Sir: In Pakistan there is no concept of toll-free calls for government institutions, banks and other companies. Most of the banks have UAN (111) numbers that charge per minute. A few banks have 0800 numbers but this number is only toll-free when it is dialled from a landline. If one is dialling from his/her mobile phone, the 0800 number also charges per minute. If a daily wage labourer calls the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) or any bank to inquire about something and if he talks for around 10 to 15 minutes, around Rs 50 will be charged, which is too much for him.It is very important that government institutions like NADRA, the passport office and others provide numbers to the public that are toll-free on mobile phones as now most people have mobiles. For banks in Pakistan it is surprising that they also do not have toll-free numbers unlike Dubai and other countries where toll-free numbers are provided and can also be dialled from mobile phones free of cost.MUBASHIR MAHMOODKarachi
