Sir: Indeed it is highly praiseworthy that the police have immediately clamped down on perpetrators who were involved in the heinous offence of exterminating almost 45 members of the peaceful Ismaili Shia community. There is no doubt that the ratio in crimes has drastically been reduced in Karachi owing to the efforts of the law enforcement agencies. However, a vague question regarding the efficacy of the police’s interrogating style haunts our minds. On the one hand, the apprehension of the alleged offenders of the Safoora bloodshed is laudable, but on the other hand, the humorous definition of police’s interrogating skills mastered by comedy king Umar Sharif causes despair among the masses. Umar Sharif in one of his famous stage shows quoted our police’s interrogating skills in these words: “In an operation to find a lost deer in a jungle where the police from the entire world had failed, our police launched a search operation. After an hour, our police found the deer while pulling an elephant out of a cave, which was vociferously confessing and saying, ‘Yes, indeed, I am the deer. Yes, indeed, I am the deer.’” AYAZ KHAN
