Sir: This is about the regrettable behavior of a star batsman Umar Akmal, who was arrested the other day on charges of traffic violation and roughing up the city warden on duty. He was arrested and detained at the Gulberg police station and was refused bail (as per law) unless presented to the magistrate. His brother Kamran Akmal has called the entire incident a conspiracy hatched against Umar. In a press briefing Kamran demanded the chief minister Punjab to hold an inquiry into the matter and take action against the concerned officials for treating his brother like a terrorist. The facts though belie his claims. I fail to understand why would there be a conspiracy behind Umar’s arrest. The Akmal brothers are only making a fool of themselves by making such ridiculous claims. Violation of traffic laws is certainly a crime and assaulting a warden is a more serious offence. There is no truth in the allegations leveled by Kamran. He needs to reprimand his brother for creating trouble and council him on anger management. Kamran and Umar should apologize for their actions and over-reaction. That is the only way to come gracefully out of the present situation. There is no harm in accepting one’s mistakes. To err is human. Javaid Bashir Via Email
