Sir: The parking of vehicles in no-parking zones is a growing issue these days in Karachi and it has prompted the traffic police to work round the clock to counter this practice. Parking in the wrong lane causes immense inconvenience to others and raises the count of road accidents. There is an urgent need for a stringent action against motorists who park on the wrong side of the road. It is very difficult to find parking in a public place due to traffic congestion in Karachi. There should be a comprehensive review of the problem because the situation is getting worse with time. This is especially true because of a huge increase in the number of vehicles and the growing trend of drivers to ignore traffic rules and regulations. In front of government offices and business premises, no one seems to care about parking properly. These wrongly parked vehicles create problems for the area’s residents. When a person parks in the middle of a street or in front of a shop, the traffic comes to a halt. When traffic police officers see such violations they simply use loudspeakers to ask the violators to move but some people pay no heed to the warnings, as they know that they will not be fined. The main cause of the problem is the insufficient parking space in areas with a high density of population. The authorities should conduct traffic campaigns to enforce traffic regulations. Traffic tickets or fines should be issued to all violators. The problem intensifies near mosques during Friday prayers. The way to address this problem is by maintaining the rule of law and taking punitive measures against violators. RUTABA MUNEER Karachi1
