Sir: We are one of the few countries that still face the polio virus. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease caused by a virus that can spread quickly. Polio can strike at any age but it mainly affects children under five years. It is indeed a matter of great concern that polio cases are still being reported and that it continues to threaten the future of our country. Approximately 220 cases have been reported in Pakistan this year. Polio immunisation campaigns have suffered continuous setbacks. Polio immunisations workers are assassinated by terrorists because they are not given enough security. These problems continue to create hurdles in making a polio-free Pakistan. Pakistan’s polio eradication problems are now complicating the global scenario for a polio-free world. Countries have already declared polio vaccination certificates mandatory for Pakistani travellers. The strategy being used by the government to eradicate polio is not working. Polio can only be prevented through timely immunisation, therefore the government needs to show its sincerity and seriousness towards this issue by making security for polio immunisation teams its first priority.
