Sir: It is extremely gratifying to note that the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, has issued a timely alert advisory to the provincial and federal health departments and public health personnel of related departments to identify and respond to the health risks posed to the internally displaced persons (IDPSs) from North Waziristan. The massive population displacement, with limited access to basic health amenities, poses a threat to the health of both the IDPs and their host communities. The NIH advisory has given details of the immanent health risks. Now, it is up to the provincial and federal governments to respond and take timely measures. With concerted efforts, this mass human tragedy can be easily handled and solved. A preventive rather than curative strategy should be the focus of this entire exercise.
