Sir: It is indeed a proud moment for the whole nation that human rights activist Asma Jehangir has been conferred the Right Livelihood Award in the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm as an ‘alternative Nobel Prize’. Without any doubt, her unshaken determination coupled with her unwavering endeavours have carried her to achieve great goals and have made her one of the greatest social leaders in the subcontinent. This brave woman was born into a politically active family with a history of activism and human rights work, and, therefore, she inherited the legacy of rebellion against tyranny. She has spent her career defending human and women’s rights, the rights of religious minorities and children in Pakistan. She was and remains a staunch critic of many draconian laws practiced in Pakistan. She has received numerous threats over the years due to her activism and human rights work but she has untiring willpower. As a founding member of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, she has served Pakistan uprightly for various causes. I think it is a matter of pride that women from Pakistan are making us happy all over the world. First, it was Malala Yousafzai who brought the Nobel Peace Prize home and now it is none other than Asma Jehangir who has won the alternate Nobel. NASIR-UD-DIN SOOMROHyderabad
