Sir: Pakistan is basically an agricultural country and thus agriculture is the ‘backbone’ of the economy and the mainstay of our national economic life. Certainly, it earns a lot from its textile industries every year. Unfortunately the textile industry of our country is producing less output due to the presence of different challenges. One of the difficulties is the non-implementation of effective policies in agriculture and textile sectors. Second, the energy crisis has badly affected the textile industry. Third, only a minimum portion of the national budget is allocated for textile exports. Fourth, high taxes have also contributed to reducing textile exports. Due to above mentioned challenges there has been a 17 percent reduction in the exports of Pakistan. The textile sector is contributing 57 percent to exports. If this sector is not flourished in well manner then our country will face multiple problems like internal and external debts. Due to these debts, the government will be compelled to take loans from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. If our politicians want to make the country a true agricultural and industrial one, they should resolve all issues faced by textile and agriculture industries. By doing this, we can increase our currency value and boost our exports; resultantly our country will be on the path of progress. YASIR ABBAS Via Email
