Sir: What a funny world we live in. The institution of the police is supposed to be one where one feels safe, able to complain about anything and seek help without any fear or reprisal. Here, in Pakistan, that same institution is feared and is known for terrorising the public, at least those people who do not have the right kind of connections. Police brutality is a sadly common occurrence and Saturday night’s aggression against the PTI and PAT supporters in the capital was a reminder of that fact. While the protesters are no saints, one sees the images being shown on television screens and cannot help but notice that the police seem to be taking perverse pleasure in beating men and women with sticks. This is why police officers are feared by a majority of the people. What we need are police reforms. More than a metro bus service or a laptop scheme we need a complete overhaul of police procedure.
