Sir: Late on Wednesday night Syed Tufail Haider, 45, originally from Jhang, was arrested by the police from the central market in Gujrat city over an argument. The police brought Haider to the Civil Lines Police Station. Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Faraz Naveed was interrogating Haider and during the interrogation both of them got into an argument. Early next morning, Naveed accused Haider of insulting the sahaba (companions of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH) and attacked him with an axe and swung it at his throat several times. Haider died on the spot. Police officials confirmed Haider’s death, ASI Faraz Naveed was arrested and a criminal report was registered against him. He will be tried for killing a prisoner. Last month Mumtaz Qadri, the assassin of Salmaan Taseer, incited an anti-terrorist squad officer to attack a prisoner who was sentenced under the blasphemy law at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. The prison guard attacked the prisoner with a gun smuggled into the prison. Earlier this week a Christian couple in Kot Radha Krishan was attacked and thrown in a brick kiln after blasphemy accusations were made against them. The police report confirmed that it was actually a personal and monetary dispute between the kiln owner and the Christian couple. The owner had loaned them Rs 500,000 to work at the kiln and the couple was unable to pay back the loan. As revenge, he falsely accused the couple of burning the Quran to settle his personal vendetta. Life for All Pakistan protested against this brutal attack saying: “This is tragic, we are heading towards destruction. This insane behaviour and intolerance will bear nothing else but destruction. It is time to act; giving mere compensation will not be enough, exemplary punishment is essential to ensure such barbaric incidents are not repeated in future. This has to stop, nothing will be left. We need to collectively stand against all kinds of injustice and intolerance. How long will the innocent suffer? The state has failed to protect the minorities; this is the reason for growing extremism in our society.”XAVIER PATRAS WILLIAMVia Email
