Sir: The Vice Chancellor Selection Committee formed by the Punjab government has completed its selection process. According to news sources, new appointments will be made in a couple of weeks. However, some important questions have surfaced due to extra efficient and haphazard working of the committee. The committee was headed by a man who himself is not a PhD degree holder. Still he interviewed all PhD professors. Same was the case with the present education sectary of the Punjab, who was the other member of the committee. The only PhD member of the committee was the Chairman Higher Education Commission Punjab. According to news reports, out of 450 candidates, 180 were shortlisted in two to three weeks and then the interview process of these 180 people was completed in a week or so. The worst-case scenario is that most of the vice chancellors will be shuffled from their respective institutions; that has made the process a game of cards where shuffling is the best solution. It means that the new head of an institution will come with new policies and vision. Education has been made a joke. The government needs to understand that our socio-economic development depends a lot on education. We hope that the Punjab Chief Minister will look into these messy affairs. Last but not least, it looks like private university owners have decided to destroy public sector universities first by using their finances and second by becoming the members of the Vice Chancellor Selection Committees.
