Sir: I had the unfortunate experience of visiting a Ramzan bazaar (market) yesterday and the very sight of it shocked me. There was nothing but chaos. The vendors were selling goods at increased prices and the prices of all vegetables and ration items were highly inflated. People had hoped that there would be a reduction in the prices of essential items but what I saw was actually the opposite. There were no checks and balances on these vendors who refused to sell more than one kilogramme of any vegetable to any one person. I asked a vendor to give me three kilogrammes of onions but he refused to do so. I tried to contact the monitoring authority there but it seemed that no one was on duty.It is the holy month of Ramzan and the authorities should be concerned about the people. The basic teaching of Islam is to serve humanity. What is the use of fasting if people are not going to be concerned for other people? The basic purpose of setting up the Ramzan bazaar is to provide rations and goods to people at minimum cost but what seems apparent is that even the Ramzan market has become a place for profitable business.
