Sir: We all know that the corporal punishment of students is a routine matter in every institution. This practice is rampant in our society. Students are ruthlessly caned for not completing their homework; also they are punished over minor scuffles with their class fellows. They are victimised and harassed to an extent that they burst into hysterical crying at the mere mention of their teachers. This miserable plight of students has often compelled them to drop out of school. This prevailing condition does not bode well for national progress. The existing dilemma of our children under the perpetual atrocities of our teachers is simply unacceptable. Moreover our government in this regard is making little headway in securing the rights of children. If this condition persists, our socio-political progress will surely be jeopardised. People in the upper echelons are requested to take some bold initiatives and ensure that cruel teachers are brought to book at the earliest. MASOOD AHMED Hyderabad
