Sir: China has the largest number of dams in the world and is in the process of making about 54 dams, which shows that the world will suffer from more water scarcity soon. Augmenting water demand shows that 40 percent of the world’s population will suffer from water shortage by 2030. Pakistan’s unbridled population growth is an alarming threat. Water consumption is going up rapidly because of increasing urbanisation. If we ascertain the availability of water in Pakistan, 50 years ago availability of water per capita per person was 5,000m3, which has declined to 1000m3 today.A few months ago we lost precious lives in Tharparkar owing to drought and malnutrition that happened because of lack of water reservoirs for the people in Thar.We are slack in dam construction, but we can save water wastage by repairing our decades-old water system. Pakistan loses two-thirds of its water resources owing to poor infrastructure. Forty percent of water is wasted through canals every day, 10 percent through evaporation, 30 percent through percolation and 20 percent by the people. It will intensify when Pakistan will be the fifth most populous country in a decade. It is really surprising that no water reservoir has been built in the last 38 years in Pakistan.Ayaz KhanQuetta
